3 Surprising Facts About Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers, Health and Beauty Associates

Dermal fillers are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments here at Health and Beauty Associates (and nationwide), and for good reason: They’re safe, they take only about 15-30 minutes to inject, and best of all, they produce immediate results.

Following your treatment, your wrinkles are smoothed away. Even better, your results last about 1-2 years, maybe longer, depending on the product used to rejuvenate your appearance. Here are three additional facts about dermal fillers that may surprise you.

Dermal fillers contain natural or biocompatible ingredients

All the dermal fillers used at Health and Beauty Associates contain either natural ingredients or safe, biocompatible components.

Juvéderm and Restylane

Juvéderm® and Restylane® are fillers made from an ingredient that’s naturally produced in your body: hyaluronic acid. Your skin’s moisture depends on hyaluronic acid, which binds with water to ensure hydration and add volume. As you get older, production of hyaluronic acid declines. As a result, your skin loses resilience and becomes dry, which significantly contributes to wrinkles.

Radiesse

Radiesse® also consists of natural ingredients. It’s made from spheres of calcium hydroxylapatite, which is the same substance that builds all your bones. When Radiesse is injected, the calcium spheres stimulate collagen production. Your wrinkles are immediately diminished due to the calcium, which is then gradually metabolized and eliminated. Meanwhile, a boost in collagen production stimulated by the calcium spheres produces longer-lasting results.

Sculptra

Sculptra® contains an FDA-approved biocompatible ingredient called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). Sculptra is different from other fillers because it doesn’t produce immediate results. Wrinkles gradually fade away as PLLA activates collagen production.

PLLA has been safely used in medical procedures for decades. For example, doctors inject it to restore facial volume when fat is lost due to a medical condition.

Bellafill

Bellafill® is unique because it produces results that last up to five years when it’s used to treat wrinkles such as nasolabial folds. This filler contains tiny polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) spheres in a collagen gel.

The collagen creates immediate results, then it’s gradually resorbed. Meanwhile, the PMMA particles stay in place, creating a supportive base that provides volume and promotes ongoing collagen production. PMMA is a biocompatible material that’s often used in medical implants.

Dermal fillers are not the same as Xeomin®

Dermal fillers and Xeomin® are both injectable cosmetic treatments, but they work using very different mechanisms. Dermal fillers do exactly that — they fill in your wrinkles. The team at Health and Beauty Associates injects a small amount of the filler just under your skin, where it plumps up the targeted wrinkle.

By comparison, Xeomin is made from botulinum toxin, which is injected directly into muscles. The toxin affects the nerves responsible for triggering muscle contractions. As Xeomin blocks the nerve signals, the muscle relaxes. As a result, the wrinkles caused by the targeted muscles are eliminated until the medication wears off.

Due to their different ways of working, dermal fillers treat different types of wrinkles than Xeomin. As a group, fillers diminish the appearance of mild to moderate wrinkles around your mouth and nose, such as laugh lines. Xeomin targets deeper wrinkles caused by repetitive muscle activity, which includes frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead furrows.

Dermal fillers do more than treat wrinkles

Dermal fillers represent a range of products that the team at Health and Beauty Associates can use to customize your treatment, even beyond diminishing wrinkles.

Some fillers are specially made to restore, sculpt and lift your cheeks, and restore volume in your mid-face area. Others are designed to create fuller lips, which also tend to lose volume over the years.

Here’s another surprise: Fillers are also used to rejuvenate the appearance of your hands. They add volume that smooths out wrinkles and hides visible veins and tendons.

When you’re ready to restore a more youthful appearance, you can choose from a variety of injectables available at Health and Beauty Associates. To schedule a consultation, call the office in Charlotte, or book an appointment online.
